There’s nothing like a warm, sweet beverage on a chilly winter afternoon or evening. One childhood favorite that comes to mind for me is hot chocolate. Growing up, my mom used to always through together the instant packs, which although convenient are loaded with a ton of sugar and artificial flavors. But, now I like to make the same comforting drink but with a homemade, real food twist using raw cacao powder, coconut milk, and a little honey and cinnamon.
With raw cacao powder, good-for-you fats from coconut oil and ghee, and nutrient dense raw honey, this recipe won’t leave you with the sugar hangover that most hot cholate mixes do. Instead of using “chocolate,” I use raw cacao — because it is the purest form of chocolate that provides your body with amazing benefits. With no sugar, it gives you a dose of magnesium that help to balance hormones and get rid of cravings. There’s no need to feel guilty about having a cup of this warming, nourishing hot chocolate. I also throw in collagen peptides and a pinch of maca to bump up the hormone balancing, gut nourishing properties.
- 8 oz coconut or almond milk (I use Califia, Red Barn, or Native Forest)
- 3 tablespoons raw cacao powder
- ½ tsp maca powder (optional)
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil (can also use ghee or grass fed butter)
- 1 scoop Vital Proteins collagen peptides
- 1 tablespoon raw honey or pure maple syrup
- pinch of cinnamon to taste
- Heat milk on stovetop until steaming. Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until frothy (about 1 minute on high). If you don’t have a blender, you can also use a hand frother but know that it won’t come out with as much foam on top. The blending is important to incorporate the collagen and coconut oil properly.
- Pour in your favorite mug, serve with a sprinkle of shredded coconut on top and enjoy
